Autopsy: Suspect in Officer Shooting Died by Suicide

An autopsy has determined that Matthew Masse, 38, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a shooting that injured a Nottingham police officer and prompted a large-scale manhunt Saturday.

Authorities said Masse allegedly fired at family members and responding officers in Raymond, leading to neighborhood lockdowns. Police later located him in a wooded area, where an exchange of gunfire occurred before he was found dead at the scene.

The medical examiner ruled the cause of death a single gunshot wound to the chin, with the manner of death classified as suicide. Masse also sustained a shrapnel injury to his elbow.

The injured officer has been released from the hospital but is expected to face a lengthy recovery. Officials said the incident remains under investigation, with interviews and evidence review ongoing.

Masse’s family said he had struggled with mental health issues and expressed condolences to the injured officer and the community.
