Massachusetts Man Receives Limited Sentence in Crash That Killed Mother

A Massachusetts man was sentenced Wednesday in connection with a 2024 crash on Interstate 95 in Portsmouth that killed his mother.

Byung Moo Hur, of Saugus, lost control of his vehicle while traveling more than 90 mph and struck a light pole. His mother, Taesoon Hur, was ejected from the car and died at the scene.

Under a plea agreement, Hur was sentenced to 12 months in jail but will serve only two weekends, along with a year of home confinement and a 10-month license suspension. Investigators found no evidence of impairment or distraction.

In a letter read in court, Hur’s father asked for compassion, noting the family’s ongoing grief. The judge said the loss of his mother was likely a greater punishment than any sentence the court could impose.
