Hassan Highlights Border Security Needs After Southern Border Visit

U.S. Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-New Hampshire, has returned to the Granite State following a visit to the U.S. southern border, where she met with federal officials and assessed ongoing security challenges.

Hassan, a member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, traveled to southern California to engage with U.S. Border Patrol agents and tour a detention facility operated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

During the visit, Hassan said frontline personnel emphasized the urgent need for increased resources to combat gun trafficking, which officials say plays a critical role in sustaining drug cartels.

“They were also really asking for additional help with inspecting southbound traffic to try to break up that cycle of drugs coming into the United States and weapons going down to Mexico,” Hassan said. “That flow is what enables cartels to operate with such impunity.”

According to the senator, improving border operations will require enhanced investment in technology, particularly tools that allow officers to more efficiently screen traffic at ports of entry and intercept illegal activity.

Hassan said bolstering these capabilities remains a top priority as lawmakers continue to address border security and transnational crime.
